President and Vice President are NOT included on the straight party ticket vote. They MUST be voted separately.

Be sure to vote in all contests – make sure your vote counts!!

Your ballot has two sides - be sure you FLIP it over and vote all offices. County Commissioner and non-partisan contests (Judges and referendum) are on the back. Follow PA-PAC’s instructions and you won’t miss anything!

We would love to have you as a member and supporter. Our endorsement decisions are made at democratically-run meetings of our members. We do not give money to candidates, but use our resources to inform voters about our endorsements. If you want to support these candidates, please contact their campaigns. Their websites are provided where available.

President & Vice-President

Barack Obama and Joe Biden - what more do we need to say? The alternative is just too disturbing to contemplate. After eight years, America needs change we can believe in! http://www.barackobama.com

U. S. Senate

Kay Hagan has an impressive record of legislative leadership in the North Carolina State Senate. She will bring a common-sense approach to taxes and the economy, and will replace tax breaks for Big Oil companies with new incentives for clean energy entrepreneurs. She has a shot at removing Senator Dole of Kansas, who has not provided effective service to North Carolina. www.kayhagan.com

U. S. Congress

We have again endorsed incumbent Democratic Representative David Price. Congressman Price has delivered federal support for community development efforts in Durham, such as the Durham Community Land Trust as well as progressive transportation options. www.davidprice.campaignoffice.com

Governor

Bev Perdue is committed to taking on the problem of global warming by declaring NC will reduce greenhouse gases 80% by 2050 and that we must change the ways we make and use energy in NC. She understands the challenges and the opportunity for NC to move to a green economy and that it will take major changes at our electric utilities to make sure energy efficiency and renewable energy can flourish. Our next governor will appoint a new majority of the NC Utilities Commission, and state regulators at every level, and their philosophy reaches deep into government. A McCrory administration would be a disaster for consumers and ordinary N. C. citizens. www.bevperdue.com

Lieutenant-Governor

Walter Dalton has been dedicated to improving public education, and creating and retaining jobs. He will work to make our state a better place. We are assured his homophobia is not sincere, and we endorse him. www.walterdalton.org

Attorney General

We are still waiting for a viable Attorney General candidate who will speak against the death penalty. Until then, we endorse Roy Cooper, who has effectively marshaled the resources of his office to protect consumers, the environment, and victims of crime. www.roycooper.com

State Auditor

Beth Wood has ten years of experience in the Auditor’s office and five years in the State Treasurer’s office. In the Auditor’s office, she worked to ensure that federal grants were being used as intended, and redesigned the Office training program. Ms. Wood is endorsed by Ralph Campbell, former state Auditor, and by the NC AFL-CIO. www.bethwoodcampaign.com

Commissioner of Agriculture

Ronnie Ansley is dedicated to agriculture. He will make North Carolina the leader in food, fiber and fuel production through agriculture, investing in renewable-sustainable green energy, made from renewable sources, for fuel production. He will lead the state to become energy independent to help lower fuel costs and cut our dependence on foreign oil. www.Ansley4Ag.com

Commissioner of Insurance

Wayne Goodwin has served as the Deputy to the incumbent Commissioner, and will continue to champion low and fair insurance rates. www.waynegoodwin.org

Commissioner of Labor

Mary Fant Donnan has served as the Director of Policy and Research at the Department of Labor from 1994 to 2001. Ms. Donnan has been endorsed by the N.C. AFL-CIO and by former Commissioner of Labor Harry Payne. www.maryfantdonnan.com

Secretary of State

Elaine Marshall is the two-term incumbent, first elected in 2000, will provide greater accountability and openness in state government and use new technologies to ensure equal access to public records. www.elainemarshall.org

Superintendent of Public Instruction

June St. Clair Atkinson receives our support based on her personal knowledge of every aspect of education from the classroom to the NC State Education Boardroom. She stands for respecting children and their families, trusting teachers, and insisting on accountability from educational and political leaders. www.juneatkinson.com

State Treasurer

We strongly endorse Janet Cowell based on her combination of training, experience in the financial industry, and service to the NC Senate and the Raleigh City Council. She has taken principled, progressive stands and championed a number of innovative programs to make government more efficient. www.cowellfortreasurer.com

N. C. Senate (Districts 18 and 20)

In the 18th District, PA-PAC has again endorsed Democratic incumbent and former Durham resident Bob Atwater.

We also endorse newly appointed Senator Floyd McKissick Jr., in the 20th District. Senator McKissick has shown an ability to represent Durham in a very effective manner, and we need him doing this job for a full term.

N. C. House (Districts 29, 30, 31)

We have also endorsed incumbents Democrats Larry Hall (29), Paul Luebke (30), and H.M. “Mickey” Michaux (31) for the State House. These progressives deserve re-election.

We make no endorsement in District 55.

District Attorney, District 14

We support Tracey Cline, who is running unopposed. www.traceycline.com

Board of County Commissioners

PA-PAC strongly endorses incumbents Becky Heron, Michael Page, and Ellen Reckhow – along with newcomers Brenda Howerton. The incumbents bring their hard work, years of service, and proven progressive stands on the issues coming before county government. Brenda has a long record of service to the Durham community.

Howerton is a business consultant and coach with an impressive client list and is currently serving her second term as an elected Soil and Water District Supervisor. She has been involved in numerous progressive organizations including Durham CAN, the Human Relations Commission, the Million Mom March, and the NAACP. www.brendahowerton.com

For more than a quarter century, Heron has been a champion for the environment, effective land use planning and transportation, and strong human services, while also serving as a thoughtful watchdog of tax dollars. www.beckyheron.org

Page, the Commissioners’ vice chairman and a former School Board chairman, is the senior pastor at Antioch Baptist Church. In his first term, Page has distinguished himself as an advocate for Durham’s low-wealth citizens and for effective social service programs. www.pagefordurham.net

With 20 years as a Commissioner and six years as chairman, Reckhow has shown strong, knowledgeable, progressive leadership in such critical areas as planning, transportation, education, and healthcare. www.ellenreckhow.org

Register of Deeds

We support incumbent Willie Covington, who is running unopposed.

Arrowood Seat - John S. Arrowood www.judgearrowood.com

District Court Judge - District 14

We endorse the unopposed incumbent Judge William A. (Drew) Marsh

Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor

PA-PAC endorses Durham native and attorney Kathryn Spann, who has served on the Farmland Preservation Board, is a resident of rural northern Durham County, and cares deeply about land conservation. She has the will and experience to assist local landowners in their soil conservation efforts. www.kathrynspann.org

Prepared Meals Tax Referendum

Vote FOR. PA-PAC supports the adoption of this referendum. This 1 percent tax on restaurant meals and other prepared foods will help generate needed revenue to develop and maintain Durham's cultural and recreational attractions - including museums, arts facilities, parks, trails, and other public open space; as well as community clean up and job training. Approximately 40% of this revenue is expected to come from visitors, including those who work in Durham but do not live here. This is not the most progressive means of raising revenue, but given our options, it should be supported by the voters. We need to make sure that the city and county governments will abide by their pledges to obligate the revenue in a responsible manner. Please vote 'FOR' this measure. (It is the last item on the ballot.)
