U. S. Senate
Kay Hagan
has an impressive record of legislative leadership in the North
Carolina State Senate. She will bring a common-sense approach to
taxes and the economy, and will replace tax breaks for Big Oil
companies with new incentives for clean energy entrepreneurs. She
has a shot at removing Senator Dole of Kansas, who has not provided
effective service to North Carolina.

U. S. Congress
We have again
endorsed incumbent Democratic Representative David Price.
Congressman Price has delivered federal support for community
development efforts in Durham, such as the Durham Community Land
Trust as well as progressive transportation options.

Governor
Bev Perdue
is committed to taking on the problem of global warming by declaring
NC will reduce greenhouse gases 80% by 2050 and that we must change
the ways we make and use energy in NC. She understands the
challenges and the opportunity for NC to move to a green economy and
that it will take major changes at our electric utilities to make
sure energy efficiency and renewable energy can flourish. Our next
governor will appoint a new majority of the NC Utilities Commission,
and state regulators at every level, and their philosophy reaches
deep into government. A McCrory administration would be a disaster
for consumers and ordinary N. C. citizens.

Lieutenant-Governor
Walter
Dalton

dedicated to improving public education, and creating and retaining
jobs. He will work to make our state a better place. We are assured

In the 18th
District, PA-PAC has again endorsed Democratic incumbent and former
Durham resident Bob Atwater.
We also endorse newly appointed Senator Floyd McKissick
Jr., in the 20th District. Senator McKissick has
shown an ability to represent Durham in a very
effective manner, and we need him doing this job for a full term.
N. C. House (Districts 29, 30, 31)
We have also
endorsed incumbents Democrats Larry Hall (29), Paul Luebke (30),
and H.M. “Mickey” Michaux (31) for the State House. These
progressives deserve re-election.
We make no
endorsement in District 55.

Tracey Cline, who is running unopposed.

Board of County Commissioners
PA-PAC strongly endorses incumbents Becky Heron, Michael
Page, and Ellen Reckhow – along with newcomers Brenda
Howerton. The incumbents bring their hard work, years of
service, and proven progressive stands on the issues coming before
county government. Brenda has a long record of service to the Durham community.
Howerton

and is currently serving her second term as an elected Soil and
Water District Supervisor. She has been involved in numerous
progressive organizations including Durham CAN, the Human Relations

thoughtful watchdog of tax dollars.

experience to assist local landowners in their soil conservation
efforts.

Prepared Meals Tax Referendum
Vote FOR. PA-PAC supports
the adoption of this referendum. This 1 percent tax on restaurant
meals and other prepared foods will help generate needed revenue to
develop and maintain Durham's cultural and recreational attractions
- including museums, arts facilities, parks, trails, and other
public open space; as well as community clean up and job training.
Approximately 40% of this revenue is expected to come from visitors,
including those who work in Durham but do not live here. This is not
the most progressive means of raising revenue, but given our
options, it should be supported by the voters. We need to make sure
that the city and county governments will abide by their pledges to
obligate the revenue in a responsible manner. Please vote 'FOR' this
measure. (It is the last item on the ballot.)
